Entry: Source-Pathway-Receptor (SPR) approach

URI: https://data.geoscience.earth/ncl/misc/477

The “Source-Pathway-Receptor” model is a representation of exposure pathways: it diagrams the emission of a pollutant from a source to a medium, and its transport by the medium to a receptor that uses or is in contact with the medium. It postulates that a risk exists when a receptor is linked to a source of danger by an exposure pathway. Risk management involves controlling at least one of these three components. These connections are often described as S-P-R links or, in some countries, as “contamination links” or “pollution links”. A comprehensive remediation strategy for a contaminated site must therefore take into account all S-P-R links deemed problematic. This model forms the basis for site design, risk assessment, management planning and monitoring.
